The story of Etain is a very
long mythological story that tells of a woman's life beginning in fairyland
or a sort of collective "all spiritual" state and is driven form
her world to eventually becoming reborn into the physical world. She changes
forms many times though out the story going from a sort of goddess, nature
spirit, to a mortal woman, and is torn between worlds spiritually because
of her great beauty. The butterfly image is used for many reasons, it was
her second form, and it was given to her because she is delicate in form
and was supposed to be her cursed form. However the form can also be
symbolic for the idea of transfiguration though out the story.
