Corbels

This work is for a restoration project for a chapel at Borgue in the south west of Scotland.  This area of Scotland is noted for some very old and beautiful churches, it is just west of Whithorn, which is the site of Scotland's first stone church, founded by St. Ninian in 397 AD.

The chapel at Borgue fell into some disrepair and much of the original wood work became victim to rot and Powder-post beetles.  It is a very great honor for me to have had the opportunity to have a part in this restoration.

Upon the arrival of the replacement pieces they will be stained to match the originals.

The original I worked from....

I was given one original to use as a guide to reproduce the detail.  It is somewhere around 200 years old and came from the time of the Celtic Revival in Scotland.

The back side shows the most rot but it has also taken a little of the back edges as well.  It is a little difficult to tell what kind of wood it is, it has the mass and slight appearance of Oak, old European lumber and American lumbers do have some differences.  I made the replacement pieces out of Oak.
