I just tested some of the other possibilities on this piece, no particular theme.

Cherry
This cross has a Deer Antler inserted into the center for a focal point, it has very often done and I have also used stones, other pieces of wood and so on.

Black Walnut \ Cherry
This cross is another representation of St. John the evangelist, shown by the Eagle.  The Cherry wood is slightly cork shaped to fit in the Black Walnut.  The center piece goes in straight and is held in place by several dowels from the back.
