The tree of life design on this carving is of a different bread than the what you usually see in Celtic art.  In the 1100 and 1200's this style witch is of a mainstream European origin came to the British Isles and was incorporated into the art form.

I have a triad in the center which is a vary traditional symbol among the Celtic peoples because many things in there heritage revolved around the number three.  The three stages of life for men and women, and poetry was often created and memorized in a sort of three part repetition.

Base makes the cross free standing, the idea of coarse came from alter cross pieces.
